RESULTSĀ FORĀ 2011 RACE Cambridge to Hamilton Kayak Race and Cruise The usual staggered start saw the slower boats heading off first. A few paddle boarders had an early swim getting used to the swirly Waikato river. Daniel Kereopa, the national SUP surf champ, missed his start and spent the day chasing. Jeremy Stephenson took out the open men's SUP in 1hr.59m. Stacey Smith was first woman home in 2hrs 15 m. Conditions suited the SUPs with light wind. Multisport A and Surf Skis started together, and Tim Grammer on Ski and Adam Fraser raced side by side the whole way. Tim was able to exit his ski quicker and cross the line seconds in front. The fastest single man went to Ben Foughy in 1hr 28m, so he won the big cash prize. Ben was in top form after just returning from racing A final K1 1000 at the worlds. Junior Rebecca Cole from Waitara club took the fastest women's title in 1hr 41m, a great effort from a junior, and prize money too. The plastic sea kayak race was hotly contested by mainly master paddlers, Leith Beaurepair winning in 1hr 58m. The oldest competitor was in this section George Venimore at 80 years! The Waitara club were convincing winners in the Club Shieild. Hopefully we will see a bigger field next year. Cheers Richard |
